Beautiful work Marcia, a great mastery of watercolors.
Fantastic work, and a very interesting composition. Kudos!
Curator’s Comment:
The opulence of hue in this painting moves considerably beyond photorealism, and offers a pure and visceral seduction of color. I’m particularly drawn to the tangled knots of rope in the bottom section, as it moves the piece into slight and unexpected abstraction. The bleached white areas allow a visual respite from the overall saturation, and are welcome pauses of visual rest. The darker sections also offer a depth that I believe can be difficult to control in watercolor. In fact, the whole piece has a strong sense of light falling on its subjects, rather than the light coming from behind. I do find the vertical elongation of the picture curious, since this degree of realism usually calls for a more traditional Renaissance window, or pictorial frame. And as much as I enjoy the fullness of this image (more is more), your studies of small arrangements of leaves and fruit are elegant specimens to behold.
