Delusional Parasitosis is the irrational belief that your body is infested with parasites. The sensation of being covered with crawling insects is a terrifying universal fear. Having lived and learned from depression for well over half my life, I have a strong desire to examine different patterns of thought that reside within the mentally ill. Rumination—the act of chewing one’s cud, or obsessively cycling a thought, was first introduced to me at the age of twelve. My hornets represent the sneaky, persistent, and pervasive thoughts that arrive with depression. Many people struggling with mental illnesses have a certain ambivalence towards their intrusive thoughts. These stinging ruminations can build empathy, compassion, creative inspiration, and curiosity for differences. These thoughts can also hinder ones’ ability to form intimate relationships, build trust and stability, and grow and mature emotionally.

Thank you for your response to my work! I failed to list the title of this work...it is "Rumination."

Curator’s Comments:

Wood grain becomes hypnotically graceful in these surreal feminine portraits.  The figures’ wasp nest hair plays up natural textural components to become surprising elements of haute couture.  This piece in particular controls the elevation of visual weight with the offset focal emphasis of the eyes and hands.  The analogous warm hues also beautifully connect the flesh and hive to the patterned ground, weaving together form and nebulous function.  The drawing entitled Anticipation is perhaps an even stronger version of this unexpectedly hovering visual weight.  Larger expanses of white negative space give the subject more room to breathe, and for the viewer to contemplate the fragility and potential menace of the precarious figural relationship.
