Curator’s Comments:
Immersion is a terrifying and spectacular piece which takes advantage of dramatic proportion and compositional scale. When I came across it on the site I didn’t at first identify it with your other paintings that use the natural delineations of birch plywood grain. These shapes seem much more organic and atmospheric- offering a cool, hazy depth within the picture plane. It also took me a few seconds of viewing before I made out the cars, which are enveloped by the cascading pile of overlapping shapes. They appear collectively as an undulating heap; suggesting a tsunami that is neither obviously synthetic nor completely natural. The giant arching top of the pile brilliantly invokes Hokasai’s Great Wave at Kanagawa in simultaneously presenting a beautiful force and ruthless threat. This ambiguity sets up a narrative that offers a chilling encounter with the small human presence.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
