In the piece Sea creatures the white space around the image is plaster to feel paper like. The inner surface projects out about 5". I use various things to create the relief in this case I mixed paper from my shredder, house paint and diatomaceous earth this from a cement like material. The black netting are onion bags with wax and wire supports. In the future I will photograph some details so it easier to read whats going on.
Curator’s Comments:
Welcome to the site! I enjoyed viewing all of the work you’ve posted so far, from the impressionistic landscapes to the unique abstraction entitled Sea Creatures. This mixed media piece has interesting surface manipulation. What appears to be black netting is visually countered by the more organic papery pink forms. I’m wondering if dyed pulp was used as a sculptural relief medium. The large white margin of the deckled edge paper support enhances the presentation, but I would like to see a more detailed section of the piece to appreciate its physical depth. It’s challenging to ascertain if some edges are painted or applied as collage. Flying Things has a similar tactile engagement. In this case the viewer can detect cast shadow under some of the detached elements, so the sculptural/haptic aspects are more pronounced. It has an uplifting and airy aesthetic, referencing natural landscape despite the suspension of perspective and vertical orientation. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work on the site.
