Curator’s Comments:
Coyote Nights is a stirring image that offers a glimpse into the wildness of the everyday, beyond the appearance of one isolated animal. The diagonal slant and internal twisting of the Vasquez Rock formations make them appear to be a living entity looming over the residential space. (I read that the Vasquez rock shapes were formed from “seismic uplift ”, which seems fitting for this surreal landscape.) The tiny human-built structures that appear at the far-right corner of the graphite drawing, extending past the broken tips of the rocks, are almost overlooked. The slight aerial view of the car and shrubbery in the foreground puts the viewers eye just above the point of horizon. The small coyote in the driveway is easily dismissed despite his central placement in the space. I find it interesting that the reaching vines and palm fronds on both sides of the landscape seem to encroach more on the dwelling that the coyote.
