The egg tempera on panel was inspired by my memories of the Middletown Folk Festival which was held each June from the late 60s to early 80s in my neighborhood. As a mandolin playing teen, I was in awe of the musicians who came from all over the US to perform.

I was interested to read Folk Festival was painted in egg tempera, another time consuming traditional media along with your silverpoint drawings.  I can see how the small meticulous brushstrokes or thin lines inform your imagery, which exhibit a classic stillness and attention to complexly detailed surfaces.  The figures in this scene in particular each convey a sense of dreaminess with their expressions; they may be somewhat unaware of each other physically in their gazes, but have a sensory engagement in their music.  The elaborately rendered ground and stray dandelions convey a natural setting, while the viewers’ eyes are dramatically slowed down by the individual blades of grass.  The gathered audience in the background is also respectfully quiet, and provides a sense of a nurturing community.  It’s interesting however that the string of artificial lights above carry so much visual weight due to their value contrast.  They read as an electric light source, but also a rhythmic repetition of multiple sparkling moons.
