Curator’s Comments:
Footbridge recently came to my attention because it plays with expectations of the straight on subject. The eerie light may have come about through digital filters or darkroom polarization, but it’s not quite a reversal of reality. Choices appear to have been made with tinted color, and value emphasis. I’m intrigued by the depiction of natural surroundings with flooded light. It washes out the details and places higher emphasis on the darkness. The perspective and eye level of the platform also helps to lead the viewer into the setting. The blackened sky further contrasts the illuminated path, making one question if we are alternately viewing a shallow façade. Footbridge is a footbridge, until it’s not.
