Curator’s Comment:
Fractions of a Moment caught my attention because of the interesting combination of sharp graphic elements and more ghostly, low contrast imagery. The curvilinear, calligraphic lines generate a flowing movement throughout the painting, breaking into interesting value reversals in the top section. The fine white lines on a black ground imply hair on an implied, ambiguous central female form. But the faint portraits embedded within the abstracted image are eerily representational, and peer out from their vaporous pink-tinted ground. Some of the faces appear to be pedestrian onlookers, while the others offer slightly more brooding, sultry stares more often seen in commercial photography. It’s quite an interesting blend of dissonant styles, as they’re united by a unique value pattern. I also respond to your purely non-objective pieces, which offer rich scumbled color, as in Of Soul, and Untitled Choice of View.
