Curator’s Comments:
The piece enumerated Gallery-volcano-big-1 reappeared on the site recently, and I was able to view it with fresh eyes, despite its original posting back in 2013. The textual reference to the volcano supports the visual cascading of vertical lines, but I also viewed the form as abstract figuration. The fuzzy gold patches, which look a bit like airbrush over acrylic or enamel, help to slow down the visual movement in the composition. I also appreciate the wispy lines pushing off from the denser brushstrokes in the center. It’s interesting that this non-objective piece appears cropped on top, with a broader, truncated section on the bottom. Despite the lack of specificity, it maintain a figure-ground relationship. I was surprised to see your other images on the site were quite representational, moving from rather traditional landscapes into appropriated portraiture. I would be interested to learn of their connectivity, and hope you consider posting new works in the coming year.
