Curator’s Comments:
Fairy Dust appeared in a random selection of images, and once I realized it belonged to your body of work, I could identify the stylistic choices in color and found materials. The piece has a refinement in the limited color palette. While I’ve admired the saturated reds and turquoise blues prevalent in many of your other sculptures and paintings, this work draws the viewer in with its receding frames and earthier contrasting pigments. The tactile physicality of the background is strong, but doesn’t overpower the delicacy of the lacey focal point. I see the gold frame as a protectorate of the flower, which takes on a figural quality. Ultimately I am conscious of the windows that zoom in on the subject, much as one would open digital images for more detail. But the piece also skillfully plays with the horizon line. The shift in color values between the frames adds visual interest, and invites the viewer to contemplate the nature of illusionistic space.
Found this piece of wood in an old abandoned hospital. I think it was a panel from some sort of cabinet.
