Curator’s Comment:
Mapping 2 as well as the pieces in your Lithosphere series are subtle, albeit esoteric in their non-objectivity. I particularly respond to the muted color palette, and quiet marks that seem to be counting or recording topographic variance. The smoky brown undulations of shadow are reminiscent of foxing, as if the surface encapsulates an aging or decaying rhythmic pattern. The arching lines also manifest a particular physicality; rather than simply being superficially drawn over the top, they appear to be secured to the surface mechanically (with sewn sutures or metal staples?). While scale doesn’t appear to be indicated on this work, I perceive a vast openness of space because of the relative and remarkably poetic emptiness of the space.
