Curator's Comments:
Thank you for inviting me to comment on your new piece, .Net. I’m happy to see you return to your constructed, minimalist sculptures after posting more gestural and organic two-dimensional works. I still perceive formal relationships between them, but the physical media does seem to steer you towards more economic design solutions. There is a slight harmonic discordance in the trajectory of the shapes. Some appear to be at opposing diagonal angles. However, this work still relies on your signature use of cantilevered supports and asymmetrical balance within an overall achromatic palette. The abundance of white quiets the piece. I find myself looking for variables within the familiar perimeters, and so I’m drawn to the brass leg supports, and altered shape of the flat base. While the brass leg fittings might not be ornate enough to count as embellishment, they do slow down the eye a bit, and draw more attention to the space when the structure meets the ground. I’m not sure how to read the cut-outs in the flat aluminum base. As they don’t echo the shapes above, it’s not a projection of shadow or form. But the opening in the rectangle suggests a puzzle piece, and perhaps by association, this object could fit into another piece. As the title and antennae like shapes evoke the intent of cyber-communication, the sculpture relates an interesting physical structure responsible for invisible transmission.
