Gone Dream Blue floats easily between realism and complete abstraction.  The long horizontal picture plane stretches out a woodland landscape into a poetic, unadulterated setting.  For lack of any explicit pictorial narrative, the piece also has unequivocal formal strengths.  I could just as easily be viewing an early Abstract Expressionistic action painting with allover mark making and vertical poles. The textural subterfuge it creates is most interesting as it vacillates between tree bark and an abstract, indeterminately roughened surface.  Color adds to the ambiguity - the saturated yellow green hues appear lush against the blacker contrasting shadow. I also find the scale and proportion appealing.  Vaguely suggesting the width of a human arm span, the landscape is a uniquely prepared slice of earth- a long window that carefully controls our field of vision.  The piece entitled Hour come ‘round is easier to initially discern, softening a sure thing.  Without visual ambivalence of the figure-ground relationship, the viewer still floats above the forest floor in the misty blue atmosphere.  This piece appears more Romantic and is some ways is even more engaging.  The lighter center of the picture plane intentionally lures us deeper into the wooded terrain, or to a subconscious metaphysical level. Perhaps terra firma with all of its celestial appearances is more of an idea rather than a specific place.
