The sky over the open fields of Galway, Ireland is always full of clouds and drama, especially in April, when I painted this. Painting with watercolor, one has to work fast to capture the movement before it changes completely. This is typical of the pastoral landscapes we see in this part of Ireland.

Curator's Comments:
The viewer slowly rolls through this lush cloudscape, Fields of South Galway, anchored by the thin strip of pale green land below. The elongated horizonal orientation enhances the sense of a wide expanse, and accentuates the green and violet tinted palette. The very small buildings and fencing place considerably less significance on human presence in the bucolic scene, but the inclusion of these figural stand-ins helps sense of scale and natural awe. I was surprised to see that the painting was a watercolor. Perhaps what I enjoy the most about the piece is the creamy opacity of the sky, and suspended weight of the shadows- not a quality I would normally associate with the medium. Looking through your other works on the site, I remember admiring the opposite visual effect of your delicate modulation of the standing stone structures in Tyrone House. I do hope you continue to post new work on the site- these pieces are a needed restful pleasure.
