Curator’s Comments:

I don’t know that your digitally manipulated imagery is strengthened by seeing different versions of the same photographic image, but the work designated Graphic Pen has an engaging sensory quality that for me moves beyond the technical filter or digital process.  The spidery lines of the tree branches emanating from the thick central truck have an otherworldly quality, as edges dissolve in the tightly hatched marks.  The small dark areas that emerge from the interstices give visual rest and variety to the overall crackling static of the pattern.  I’m also reminded of x-rays or natural bioluminescence with the dramatic value reversal. The other renditions of the still-green tree, filtered in traditional local color, are less surprising and therefore for me somewhat less original.  The tree remains a beautifully rendered form in all works, but the achromatic piece makes me view it quite differently.
