Curator’s Comments:
Guardian is a mysterious piece, in the physical and psychological relationship intended between the two supine figures. The bottom figure is artfully encapsulated in a linear crystalline case suggestive of a chrysalis or bed. Her slightly contorted pose reminds me of etchings on early Greek vessels. The dreamlike guardian figure hovering above in a pink cloud echoes the languid posture of the lower figure, without serving as a mirrored reflection. It’s not quite clear if either is aware of the other; though the top figure seems more confidently aware of her position. While the inherent narrative in the piece remains vague, I enjoy the visual tension between the two, and the elegant line quality throughout the rendering. The economy of the space is clean and adds to the effortless float of the subjects. Slightly less gestural than some of your other figurative pieces, the drawing employs sinuous continuous contour rather than animated/agitated line work. Both approaches are quite pleasing, and the lines assert themselves and alter the mood of their respective characters.
