Curator’s Comments:
Guinness Home provides sharp graphic appeal as a black and white photograph; the gritty brick textures beautifully contrasting the clean blocky font. While this piece may initially call to mind contemporary artists dealing with words, there is a visual manipulation of the many varied surfaces to suggest a more painterly/hand manipulated sensibility and narrative. I also sense a certain irony in the intimacy of the photograph when set up against the very prominent and public display. The literal word ‘home’ conjures personal space, or a safe domestic sphere. Other connotations towards homeland or place of origin also emerge when considered as an image captured by a foreign observer or tourist. It has occurred to me this photograph could be a purely formal or academic exercise. The interplay of light and shadow crossed with the post-industrial architecture is engaging just as elegant form/composition. But viewed in the context of the other works in your portfolio on the site, I detect connecting threads in the passageways. While offering dramatic visual perspectives, they also seem to be about the movement from past to present- and back again.
