Curator’s Comments:
I see Gypsy Pop Art Pup was created (and sold) some years back, but it caught my attention today when it appeared randomly on the site. The graphic nature of the image’s value and color pattern set it apart from your other more traditional animal portraits. While those former pieces exhibit a strong sense of realism, and possibly a strong likeness to their subjects, Gypsy Pop Art Pup appeals to me without connection to the specific dog. I appreciate the thinner interior contour lines indicating the edge of the animals shoulder and jaw line, and the manner in which they break up the dynamic black spots. The red ground is also a bold choice in the otherwise achromatic composition. I wonder if you’ve created other pieces since this one that push beyond the photographic representation of the subject, into a more abstracted and arguably expressive piece. In any case, I do hope you consider sharing your new work.
