Thank you Susan!
Thank you so much for your kind words, but most of all for taking the time to write such a lengthy critique. It was like a mini art lesson!
Curator’s Comment:
Who could not love this small empathetic painting entitled (or named) Gypsy? For me it stands out among your other animal portraits because of color and composition. The angle of the body and head nicely provide asymmetrical openings of negative space; moving the whole dog to the left pushes her out from the center of the picture plane and into the viewers’ space. The small triangle of dark background in the upper left also effectively balances the contrasted value pattern. The cooler blue shadows on the left of her body offset the pinkish tones on her right side, adding depth and warm to an otherwise all white subject. I especially appreciate the warm hued contour lines around her ear, which contains blue shadow, finding the temperature shift animates and engages the image. Similarly, the pinkish hues within the animal’s’ black nose creates a fuller sensation of representational color and physical dimension.
