Curator’s Comments:
I just found Through the Eyes of a Child in a random search, and I’m attracted to the delicate features of the child in contrast to the more dramatic dark ground. The extreme asymmetry of the composition is unexpected, and creates a pregnant pause. While I find the painting to be almost photographically real, the warm color and treatment of the forms imbues the work with a slighted idealized softness, rather than sharp definition. With high contrast chiaroscuro, the edges blur ever so slightly, rounding the figure, her garments and book. The muted pinks and browns further serve to quiet the space, and offer a scene of wistful contemplation.
