Curator’s Comments:
It’s great to see this new sculpture! The title, Geo Palazzo, sets the viewer up for a work on a grand scale in terms or color and energy, and/or actual size. While I’m viewing traditional maquette dimensions now, I could easily envision this sculpture constructed on a much larger scale. It lives up to its title in visual momentum and activity. The many small colored geometric forms resting on the stone base suggest an architectural setting as much as a freestanding entity. I’m accustomed to seeking out the cantilevered elements in your studio practice, and enjoy the broad reach of the arced rods. It’s diagonal tilt wonderfully counters the opposing sway of the larger blue beam. This syncopation is formally echoed in the cylindrical and triangular shapes below. It occurs to me your sculptures have become more complex over the past year, and I wonder if that is an intentional aesthetic decision. In my mind they are also more self-referential, closing in on themselves and containing contrasting forms rather than projecting outwards, as in Star, Divergence, and Comet (made in 2017-18). There is a strong and definitive vision and visual language in your sculptural work, and I enjoy the rhythmic dance between kinetic and static geometric elements. Thank you for sharing this new piece.
