Curator’s Comments:
Insert Foot came up in a search of random images on the site, and it has a fresh, dynamic quality that deserves a longer look. The figures for me are reminiscent of Robert Colescott, in the abstraction/distortion of scale and spatial stacking, as well as in their rounded knobby features. The compression of the space within the picture gives the mood a feeling of intense closeness, but not quite intimacy. The figures are not truly engaged with each other, and their eyes and attention are pulled elsewhere. But they’re nonetheless drawn into theatrical expression and social posturing. I enjoy the humor in this painting, which is evident in many of your other works. The narratives that unfold are simple; sometimes sweet and often ironic in their on-the-money description of everyday human affectation. I hope you’ll keep posting new work to the site.
