Curator’s Comments:
These nonobjective paintings, all nondescriptly entitled Image, distinguish themselves from the others in the grouping with varying degrees of color intensity and breaks from a gridded space. All of the paintings seem to be to be pure meditations on the nature of order and chaos. The regularly of the shapes and roughly linear composition explore deviations from the norm rather than free flowing, organic compositions. But I think this particular work stands out because of the interval of space between the colored rectangles, and lower intensity hues. Its strength is in the sophistication of the muted color palette and designed cadence, though one can arguably favor the more intense primary hues of the second to last piece in the series. I also detect a formulized tetradic color relationship in this image, with two sets of complementary hues. The blue-orange pair is most dominant, while the smaller black shapes peppered through the work add unpredictability and awareness of the changes in directionality. I do wish the photos cropped out the background studio space. While sometimes these unintentional inclusions add context and scale, these works for me demand quieter, cerebral contemplation for full appreciation of their nuances.
