Curator’s Comments:
Thank you for inviting me to look at your portfolio as a whole. I have admired several of your highly saturated color photographs before, but another look at your work has drawn me into this achromatic landscape entitled/untitled No Name. There is an achingly beautiful quality in the silvery haze- I sense loneliness and isolation from the darker island or peninsula. But there’s also a nostalgic mood to the muted value pattern- as if this were printed from an old glass plate. The more textured value contrast of the grass in the foreground enhances the atmospheric perspective, while the smooth ripples on the water’s surface read as silky breaks in the otherwise indistinguishable water and sky. It’s interesting that the very things I admire about this piece are possibly visually opposed to the aspects I’ve enjoyed in your other images. I’d previously commented on the surprising figure-ground relationships in Endless Summer and West Franklyn St. Both of these pieces seduce the viewer with a high chroma palette, coupled with a surprising expanse of unoccupied space. Londons Burning similarly shares a relationship between the fantastical and the familiar. It’s this push and pull that holds my attention, and clues me in to the realization that I’m seeing something I thought I knew in a very different way. While to some tangible degree, the works I’ve identified as my favorites all build on this visual tension, but they also present as very different approaches to landscape.
