Curator’s Comment:
I respond to the smoky greys and blacks in this charcoal drawing, and the manner in which they construct languid, sensual abstract form. Far from academic, the thin black linear marks accentuate the interior and exterior contours of the torso. I also like the larger sweeping gestures throughout the image that are apart from obvious anatomy and thus set up faintly conflicting counter-movements. The second drawing appears to be even more reduced, or compositionally cropped than the first. The black lines give the impression of hovering above structural space and direct visual emphasis into the poetically empty voids. The loosely scribbled-in triangular shape at the top left also serves as a varied type of mark-marking; literally pointing us back down into the softer folds. In this case the formal elements deftly move past strictly figurative associations, and into an ambiguous realm of organic abstraction.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
