Curator’s Comments:
Perhaps it’s because I just finished reading James Elkins’ What Painting Is that I see alchemy in this pure painterly expression. The seemingly untitled piece is noted to be of a modest 2’x2’ scale, and yet has a spectacular presence and raw sense of the properties of paint. Rather than create tension between two straight complementary hues, the isolation of the purplish-violet splotch is like a dark bruise on the edge of the golden yellow field. It forms a faint reference to horizon, while simultaneously carrying the traditional visual weight of a figure against a pictorial ground. I also appreciate the pale drips below the shape that subtly and effectively move its contrasting pigment into the other section. It carries a beautiful feeling of movement and sublime transition.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
