Curator’s Comment:

This soft contemplative piece seems to be somewhat of an anomaly in your portfolio.  Grounded in a stylized figurative style, it doesn’t rely on hard edged or vivid collaged elements.  The effect is soothing and contemplative- visually synched with the snail’s pace.  The smooth arcs of the curled female and flower forms are also harmonious and engaging, despite the slightly dismayed facial expression and gesture of the woman.  I like the achromatic circular focus on her face, while the motif is echoed in the slightly overlapping moon overhead.  It’s interesting to contrast this painting with the piece titled New Hampshire Collage.  Also containing a large female subject, flower, and smaller animals, it offers a very different aesthetic sensibility.   The multiple dominant textiles assert a louder tone, competing with intense color and pattern.  In this case the female form is given over to artifice rather than viewed in her natural state.  Represented by a modestly clothed mannequin, her capacity for expression is further muted by the cropping of her head.  As the main figure of the piece, she is unaware or unmoved by her animated surroundings, including the small white birds
