Curator’s Comments:
This untitled figurative piece came up on the site today, and I’m enamored with the varied handling of the separate segments, with color and line. The saturated blue and pink hues create further emphasis on the face, which is already a strong focal point. While the blue section facing the viewer is clearly in profile, the pink half is more ambiguous. Turning in space, the eye and mouth are slightly more frontal, creating a duplicitous representation of features. The effect is as first subtle, but also conjures a mask. The further counterbalance of small pieces of pink and blue background balance out the visual weight, and anchor her in the picture plane. But it’s the low chroma color and muted shadows in the body that form a sophisticated sweep of form, and provide graphic contrast. The soft lines are a surprising treatment of the body, along with abrupt shifts in value. Whereas many of your figure drawings appear to have a photographically generated realism, this piece makes more subjective, and expressive choices. Thank you for sharing it on the site.
