Curator’s Comment:
This Land Devours is a suggestive sculpture by title if not also by design. The natural environment in which the work is seated draws obvious connections between the tree branch and root structure, but also contrasts the iron-like frame against full green foliage. The piece is elegant in its economic simplicity, embodying wind in its unvarying directional lines in the top portion. I might have viewed the piece as vulnerable without the title, interpreting the bottom as tenuously clutching its grasp on the ground. Maybe this is still the conceptual intent. But the title offers a dualistic concept of the branched structure as invasive species, consumed or consuming its environmental host.
