What’s not to love about The Hulk?  The piece is surprisingly subtle however, considering its overarching Pop sensibility.  The color palette is especially muted, while the stenciled letters and the exaggerated Ben-Day dot pattern cast a hazy grittiness over the subject.  While scale isn’t indicated, I imagine there’s a strong graphic presence to the actual art object.  I think it helps that the black shapes aren’t solid and opaque, as the dots seem to float in and out of the transmutable positive space. The square proportions offer solidity, and stabilizing balance.  Likewise, the (untitled/ IMG 9652 ) Spiderman piece blends heroic mythos with rough, cartoonish design.  Again, I find the lower chroma, less saturated hues appealing and unexpected. The radiating lines from the eyes reflect a more delicate pattern, moving from repeated dots to moiré lace.  While some of the historic human figures depicted are made larger than life, for me they lack a certain romanticization of form.  I suppose I get hung up in likeness and personal identity, rather than allowing me as a viewer to impose archetypal adulation.
