Curator’s Comments:
The very entertaining titles of the works in this series lead the viewer to a distinctive and extraordinary understanding of the straightforward whimsical drawings. Deceptively simple in their dead centered compositions and cartoonish style, the tentacles embody the simple and menacing threats of everyday life. My favorite in the bunch is Income Statements. Richly achromatic, the drawing is the most developed in its range of chiaroscuro value and texture, and appears to be one of the most complex images in terms of assimilation of natural and synthetic elements. The warm neutral background color with faint circular patterning seems more appropriate for the graphite work, setting up a softer space for the viewer to appreciate the finer elements. The grey dots also echo the suction cups on the form, and help to direct the eye circularly around the picture plane. I can appreciate the more graphic pop sensibility of the brighter colored works, and the irony of the intentionally child-like colors in depicting adult challenges and tribulations. But I more quickly move through those pieces- staying to look longer at the darker, and more beautifully rendered everyday angst.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
