Curator’s Comments:

On the Lawn captures the imagination as the two female figures engage the viewer just as their personal features are obscured. It’s an interesting give and take; an invitation into the intimacy of their environment just as the distortions forces a more formal reading of the picture.  The grassy, almost tropical surroundings and color palette accentuate the ambivalent feminine allure of the subjects. In this way they are reminiscent for me of Gauguin’s Tahitian women.  But the scene is decidedly more contemporary and painterly in approach.  The repetition of dots and stripes in their clothes for example, echo the gestural marks in their surroundings. While there is constructed pictorial space in the dark platform on which the figure in the foreground is seated as well as in the potted plants, the space forfeits atmospheric perspective for an urbane fluidity.   It’s a pleasure seeing these lush new paintings on the site.
