Curator’s Comments:
It’s enjoyable to view site specific works on the site, as they suggest a gestalt or totality in their consideration of form and space. But for me the views of this installed Peace sphere are most engaging when the blue sphere actually visually contradicts its environment. The formal aesthetics of the sculpture don’t quite move into the perfection of geometry, but I can’t help feeling the primary blue hue is an artificially imposed color surrounded by the brown and greens in the forest. The technical color choice as well as shape could symbolically reach towards a celestial/otherworldly ideal or perfection, or alternately acknowledge these views and ideas exist outside of our natural selves. It’s an interesting idea to contemplate. I wish the photographs through the skin of the sphere with portions of the landscape coming through were a little clearer. The superimposed graphics against the trees sets up an interesting turn in the viewing.
