Curator’s Comments:
This still life (with enormous fruit!) is quite pleasing to the eye, while it does play with perceptions about color and scale. The square format of the picture plane keeps an appealing visual tension, as we view the table from slightly above, in traditional one point linear perspective. I enjoy the small bits of broken color throughout, which infuse the painting with the vibrancy of an exaggerated local color palette, and textural shifts. I also appreciate the repetition of circular shapes in creating a rhythmic pattern; from the stool top, oranges, round of bread, etc. The amplified flower petals stretch out across the still life platform, and deftly connect the pieces to the background. The intense flat red cutting board (or book?) becomes a central focal point, and compositional anchor for the swimming variety of shapes and more intricate color relationships. I was a bit surprised to see this more representational paining among your other more abstract and non-objective works. While it may be somewhat of an outlier, it does share a playful exuberance of repetition of shapes; a denser and more concentrated play of form.
