Curator’s Comments:

Edisto appeared in a random selection today, and I was taken in by the explosive, shimmering color.  The diptych’s dark overall red-green palette looks punctuated by bits of metallic pigment.  But it’s difficult to decipher if the painting incorporates metallic acrylic into the large-scale work. The illusion of gold reflection could also be coming from the color and value contrast. I’m intrigued by the mirrored imagery; it presents as an almost accidental flow of aqueous media, and yet is rather carefully echoed in each of the twin canvases. This suggests a sort of controlled synchronicity or ordering of what is initially perceived as alchemic movement in the bold design.  I imagine the title of the piece could refer to the river or island off the coast of South Carolina. I realize you were a considerable geographic distance from this Edisto back in 2009 when this work as created.  Wherever you are today, I hope you’re continuing with your vibrant painting practice.
