I find King’s Cross to be a brilliant painting of light and shadow. While stylistically representational, the structure of the illuminated gridded window and reflected light on the floor heightens the dramatic value pattern while actually minimizing the impact of color. I very much enjoy the irregular configurations of scattered light and shadow below the central figures; they take on greater visual importance than the unassuming bodies that cast them. The skillful handling of small architectural details set the mood and grounds the picture. For example, the repetition of the small globe lights along the ride side of the piece adds a satisfying punctuation of space, suggesting small intervals of hurried time themselves.
