Thanks for looking at the work and your comments on the paintings. I am hard at work finishing the next body of work to be exhibited in Toronto this October.
Curator’s Comments:
Thank you for bringing your new work to my attention. There is a rough brutality to your painting style that is extremely appealing. In particular, the saturated red throughout this work engulfs the senses and creates a commanding field of space. Control Room has a grid like reference to planned landscape, while the shift in perspective to an aerial view suggests flight. The larger scale indicated of this piece no doubt contributes to the impression of an expanse. My eye keeps getting drawn to the top section- or background if linear perspective is indeed indicated. The choppy stippled strokes of crimson vibrate and denote edgy visual tension. It’s almost hypnotic. The flecks of blue and green enhance the complementary landscape, in what looks like a roughly scumbled surface. The few patches of white along the right side and slightly up from the center help establish a figure-ground relationship. I find myself wishing there were more of these chunks, to free me from the forceful and almost violent color field. Crystal Lores also employs an aggressive mark making and broken color, but the mood is very different with the lighter, cooler palette. Your paintings are impressive examples of the sensory power of raw color to impact the emotional and psychological state of the viewer.
