Curator’s Comment:
Ipswich Marches contains some of the same virtuoso brushwork experienced in your other landscapes, but I find the perspeptive of this space and single surprising burst of blue-violet water at the bottom of the picture plane to be refreshingly risky in an otherwise traditional subject matter. The strong diagonal cut of the water’s path is also an appealing compositional choice, lending a graphic punch to the softer Impressionistic handling of the bank. The great atmospheric perspective of the hazy tree line and final horizon deepen the pictorial space, as the viewer’s eye stretches out across an open, tentatively hospitable ecosystem. I also quite like the painting entitled Shipwreck. I was just noticing that you tend to work much tighter when addressing a human subject rather than a landscape, but the boat holds a figurative presence while presenting a formal exception as it employs less restrained expression. The list of the structure to one side further sets off dramatic and unexpected instability in the piece.
