Curator’s Comment:

Isthmus, like its title suggests, is a deep but quiet rendition of solid mass. The blackish fissure cutting through the painting also reads as a positive shape.  I really like that the white areas are not completely white-subtle variations emerge, sculpting the cleaved mass of land/space.  The edges are softened by the brushstrokes, implying movement, or tectonic shifts. Despite your expressive and successful use of color in the other works you’ve posted, the restricted color scheme works especially well here.  There’s a simplicity that is at once intrepid but poetic.  It’s forceful, but ultimately has a meditative quality that provides respite from the visual overload of contemporary life.
