Curator’s Comments:
I find Church Farm Field (2) to be a pleasing painting in its bold and unwavering design elements mingled with nuanced areas of diffused color. The trailing brown tractor lines set against the crisp white snow produce sufficient regularity for rhythmic patterning, while also offering interval and textural variation to maintain visual interest. I enjoy the manner in which the small church structure breaks the lines of the landscape and abstraction of space. It’s more specific representation grounds the work and nicely connects the graphic patterns to the tree line in the background, and pinkish-yellow sky. I also appreciate the dip in the horizon, as the field lowers spatially to reveal a rising, and counterbalancing tree line. The fairly large size of the actual piece likely accentuates these contrasting formal elements and draws the viewer into the pastoral scene.
