Curator’s Comments:
This rather large-scale oil painting Suiting Up, was recently featured on the site despite the fact that its initial post dates back to 2012. I was drawn in to the glossy simulated surfaces and patterned contrast of the baseball player’s uniform, and the burnished browns of wood, hair, and skin. His seated posture appears on edge, as if he’s about to burst back in to an active game. The overall focus of the scene is curious. The indication of another player on the bench is tightly cropped, and above the main catcher. The emptiness of the space to the main figure’s right is only occupied by an abandoned glove, but in this context the object takes on the presence of a third persona. I wonder if the arrangement was intentional, or if the cropping of the dugout space comes naturally from a photographic reference. Most of your works reveal a photographic sharpness, but I’m particularly attracted to the pieces which appear to capture a fleeting moment in the game. I do hope you consider posting new works to the site, if you are still active and able.
