Curator’s Comment:
While I’m not well versed in contemporary fantasy imagery, this pencil drawing of Juliet caught my eye in a random selection of works on the site. The illustrative format of an arched frame with text beneath suggests a tarot card, or watercolor by graphic Art Nouveau artist Alfonse Mucha. The piece also shares Mucha’s concerns with decorative space and theatrical costuming that emphasize flowing feminine lines. I particularly enjoy the pose in which your Juliet turns back slightly towards the viewer, with her pink cape cascading over and breaking the bottom of the gold frame. The upwardly streaming ribbons in the character’s hair help to direct our attention back to the top of the composition, and provides visual interest to compete with the ornate dress. The color palette is rich and alluring, with the figure’s red-brown hair essentially doubling as a cape to counter the curve of the dress. I’d be curious to know if these images function as a set, or if they are stand-alone works of iconic heroines across space and time. Please consider sharing new works if you are still active on the site, as I see this works were posted a number of years ago.
