Curator’s Comments:
I came across Prenuptial randomly on the site today, and am fully enamored with the piece. I interpret a very faintly dated quality to the collaged figure- perhaps a Surreal or Dadaist reference, with a contemporary bite. (No pun intended with your inclusion of the human teeth.) The horseshoe jaw of teeth does of course capture my interest and imagination, echoing the chains of what look to be jewelry and men’s’ black dress shoes. The gestural bend of her body and presentation of her tilted head both move her towards the viewer, while her identity is ultimately obscured in the mask of other design inclusions. I’m intrigued by the possible iconography of her long black dress and hair, as they are elements of fashion and couture. In the context of the title, the subject may be presenting personal items of loss and gain in a marital transaction. The items are stacked within her being- counted and quantified, and yet look set to tumble out of her control when her stature inevitably moves back up to an upright position. But perhaps I’m reading too much into the narrative of the piece. It may be a formal relationship that hints at the fringe of gender identity because of the title and collaged elements elusive associations.
