Curator’s Comment:
These are disquieting images- banal in their lack of specificity of location or human engagement. Technically, the oils are very proficient, and contain ever so slight distortions of perspective and space. Not entirely surreal, there is still a strange detachment for the viewer. Color is muted, and slightly off. The “Red” (in the title) overpass doesn’t create a warning barrier, but pulls us towards it’s emptiness beyond the expanse of a smooth clean road. Ultimately we aren’t afforded a pedestrians’ view- but are placed in the space of a driver, without the car. Yet the view is a familiar one of countless, unmemorable road-trips. There’s no Jack Kerouac love here. The nostalgia, if any exists, is in the physical open highway itself.
