Curator’s Comments:
These new oil on canvas paintings are exquisitely dense, and yet maintain an assured quality of light. Meandering in Mist is my favorite of the grouping, with its allover shifting surface. The pink tonality is nearly fleshy, while punctuated by darker contrasting bits of blue and violet. I like that the center of the work remains less worked and layered, which helps to maintain a circular movement within the stalwart square format. The impressive scale no doubt creates a wide open environment for the viewer. I also find visual respite in the similarly composed work String of Pearls. Slightly more agitated in its pervasive and brushy pictorial movement, the small blocks of pale aqua blue help ground the viewer within the enveloping space. I do find it remarkable that this work conjures the distinct impression of a floral garden without any discernible shapes or forms.
