Curator’s Comment:
I can’t get enough of your painting. Knight 4 remains a popularly viewed work on the site more than a decade after it was first shared. The composition is particularly striking. I appreciate the classical rendering of the human form, with the muscular Carravaggio-esque tenebrism, and anatomical subtlety. The surreal environment displaces this Classical form into a wholly imagined space, in which the gleaming metal teapot becomes a proxy for the disembodied head. The placement of the real head on the table, among other serving pieces conjures iconographic readings of Salome and John the Baptist. I also appreciate the inward positioning of the head, which views its own body. The swooping orange ropey shape doesn’t obviously correspond to the visual narrative, but I believe functions as a strong visual device to move us through the piece. Connecting us back up to the similarly hued orange window at the top of the long composition, the viewer is greeted with faint white stars. I find these to be curious embellishments within a psychologically dark, and arresting image. Please do consider sharing your new paintings with us is you are still active and able.
