Curator’s Comments:
At first viewing, Landing 11 appears to be one of your more mundane images. It lacks the gritty textures and eroded patinas found in your door series, and ghostly New Orleans monuments. The central placement of the building also appears static at first, but looking longer made me appreciate your smart compositional choices. The parking lines of the pavement direct the viewers’ eye to the structure, and echo the radiating tube lights in its awning, reversing their outward trajectory. The stormy sky offers a surreal backdrop for the otherwise familiar subject, injecting a vaguely otherworldly quality to the scene. This is enhanced by the absence of people. I appreciate the title of the photograph, which plays with the reference to spaceship, along with the notion of an ordinary platform. It’s a stylish work. Rather than seeing it as an outlier to your mystical choice of subjects, I understand it to share the vision of the extraordinary within our everyday sight.
