Curator’s Comment:
Surrealist decalcomania seems to merge with calligraphic mark making in these exquisite allover textural images. The fragile networks of web-like lines appear to crackle around larger pools of aqueous color, suggesting a micro/macro cosmic association. Because of the very judicious use of pure white within the image the bright highlights read as actual light, bringing the illusion of an energy source to the nonobjective composition. The similarly hued triptych on paper nicely pushes the symbiotic relationship to each other through connective line. I also see the yellow ochre path cutting across all three images as softening the higher chroma orange, and setting up a hierarchy of space and color. The blank white interval of space between the separate images effectively slows down the visual movement and highlights their collective identity. However, I would say that I find the presentation a little distracting. While I greatly appreciate the neutrality of the framing, it looks as though there’s a physical (glass or film? ) barrier between some the work. There’s a lot to see here, and I’m afraid I may be missing some of the subtly.
