Curator’s Comments:
I always enjoy taking in your edgy abstractions when they appear on the site. Viewing the enigmatic painting lari (tatters) randomly today, I was drawn into the densely compartmentalized interior space, with varying degrees of opacity and semi-translucency. The hard edges I’m accustomed to seeing in your other pieces appear to soften, just slightly. The pinkish hues in the center are particularly rich, and resonate with an animated quality. It occurs to me the color palette is rather muted when compared to the vibrant pieces in your portfolio presented here. While there are bits of high chroma yellow to move our eyes throughout the entire canvas, the structure of the high contrast value pattern provides the underlying support for the piece. And while I have enjoyed repeated elements of pattern in your collage work, lari (tatters) enjoys a looser, and more painterly sensibility. I also detect an equality in the arrangement of forms within the square. Last year I commented on the heavier weight of the top of the painting entitled Leash. The suspension of toppling shapes in that composition evoke a dynamic tension; whereas in this work, the pieces have arrived at a stable harmony.
