Thanks for offering insight into the objects and mythology- it definitely enriches the viewing experience.
Thank you Kristen for your review: I always value all your commentaries.
The heads are antique wooden balinese puppets recicled. Together with the rocks they represent the seven children of Martyr Saint Felicitas that were beheaded as a punishment. The leyend is from Romans times as you know.
Thanks a lot ! Best regards, Antonio
Curator’s Comment:
I am delighted to see the new pieces you posted on the site, and in particular Felicitas. This work appears to have a stronger sculptural baring than many of your other assemblage pieces, in that it doesn’t rely on a two dimensional backing or plane but exists in the round. The wheels on the container animate the piece, but also give it a feeling of antiquation or industrialization. The overall brownish patina assists in this aged sensibility. I find the reference to blessings to be somewhat ironic, as the heads alternate with what appear to be similar wrapped stones. The medium indicated only references found objects, so I’m also wondering if you’ve sculpted the heads from clay, or if they had a previous function? If the case is the later I may be missing a utilitarian association in the content of the piece.
